werden, wird, wurde, ist geworden

The verb "werden" is used in three important ways in German.
Because "werden" is an irregular verb used in so many ways, it is important to memorize the irregular forms and practice them.

I. The basic meaning is "to become," sometimes expressed as "to get" (to get dark, to get late).

Es wird dunkel.
It's getting dark. (present tense)
Es wird schon spät.
It's already getting late. (present tense)
Wie ist das teuer geworden!
How expensive that's gotten! (conversational past)
Alle Menschen werden Brüder wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
All people become brothers where your gentle wing hovers. (present tense)
Es wurde mühsam.
It got tiresome. (narrative past tense)
Warum werde ich nicht satt?
Why don't I get satisfied? (present tense)

II. "Werden" is used as an auxiliary (helping) verb also. It is used for the future tense and the passive voice.
"Werden" plus the infinitive form the future tense.

Ich werde dir schreiben.
I will write to you.
Wirst du mich lieben, wenn ich vierundsechzig bin?
Will you love me when I'm sixty-four?
Das wird sie verstehen.
She will understand that.
Ich will nichts tun, was ich später mal bereuen werde.
I don't want to do something that I'll regret sometime later.
Wird es immer so sein?
Will it always be like this?

III. "Werden" plus the participle form the passive voice.

Wollust ward (wurde) dem Wurm gegeben . . .
Pleasure was given to the worm . . . (narrative past tense)
Der Mönch wurde mit harten Worten abgewiesen.
The monk was turned away with harsh words. (narrative past)
Der Mönch wurde von der armen Witwe eingelassen.
The monk was let in by the old widow. (narrative past)
Jenny Towler ward (wurde) gefunden / mit einem Messer in der Brust . . .
Jenny Towler was found with a knife in her breast . . . (narrative past)
Hätte die Alte die Bohne in den Topf gebracht, wäre sie wie ihre Kameraden zu Brei gekocht worden.
If the old lady had gotten the bean into the pot, it would have been cooked to mush like its comrades. (past subjunctive)

er /sie / es wird	Gretchen wird groß.	Little Greta is getting big.

to get (to become) = werden
to get (to obtain, to receive) = bekommen

Frau Schwarz, Sie bekommen viel Geld! Sie werden reich!
Ms. Schwarz, you're getting a lot of money! You're getting rich!
Mein Kind, du bekommst gute Noten in der Schule! Du wirst ein braver Schüler!
My child, you're getting good grades in school! You're becoming a clever student!
Franz bekommt das Stipendium bestimmt, und wird nächstes Semester Student.
Franz is definitely getting the scholarship and becoming a student next semester.
Seitdem der Autor berühmt geworden ist, hat er eine Menge Briefe bekommen.
Since the author became famous, he received a vast amount of letters.

Übung: "bekommen" oder "werden"?

Future tense = werden + infinitive

The future tense of all verbs in German is composed of the present tense of "werden" plus the infinitive.
In these sentences, "werden" is an auxiliary verb that means "will" or "shall," often shortened to just the last two letters (I'll, she'll, we'll, etc.).

In spoken German, as in English, the use of the present tense with a time expression is more common than the use of the future tense. "I'm going tomorrow" is more common than "I shall go tomorrow," "ich gehe morgen," rather than "ich werde morgen gehen".

Used with the adverb "wohl," the future tense expresses probability in the present time.

Ich werde schon bestehen.
I'll survive.

Du wirst später verstehen, Peter.
You will understand later, Peter.

Er (sie) (es) wird aufstehen.
He (she) (it) will wake up.

Opa wird wohl schon im Bett sein.
Grandpa's probably already in bed.
("wird wohl")

Wir werden vieles sehen.
We shall see many things.

Ihr werdet viel lernen, Anna und Rolf.
You-all will learn a lot, Anna and Rolf.

Sie werden wohl zu Hause sein.
They're probably at home. ("werden wohl")

Sie werden im Frühling hin, Frau Kühn.
You will (go) there in the spring, Mrs. Kuehn. ("hin" = "hingehen")

You are being deceived by that false friend.

er /sie / es wird gesagt
it is (being) said Das wird oft gesagt.
That is often said. People say that often.

wir werden abgeholt
we are (being) picked up Wir werden mit dem Taxi abgeholt.
We are being picked up by taxi.

ihr werdet verstanden
you are (being) understood Werdet ihr denn von euren Eltern verstanden?
Are you (all) understood by your parents?

sie werden verkauft
they are (being) sold Diese Strümpfe werden bei Hertie verkauft.
These stockings are sold at Hertie's.

Sie werden geschickt
you are (being) sent Sie werden nach Deutschland geschickt.
You are being sent to Germany.
